What it is.

The founding text on choice architecture, and why defaults carry so much weight.

A choice architect is whoever designs the context a decision gets made in, and the claim is that there is no neutral way to do it. Some default, some ordering, some framing is always there, so the honest move is to arrange it well. Thaler and Sunstein call that paternalism of means rather than ends. The line I kept is the simplest in the book. If you want someone to do something, make it easy.

The strongest objection

Two objections land. Critics read means-not-ends as manipulation with extra steps, since it assumes the architect knows what you really want. And real-world nudge units get effects far smaller than the published studies promised.

Why it is here.

Defaults

A default is the option you get when you do nothing. Changing takes effort, so most people stick with it. Whoever sets it shapes the outcome.

Cues & Prompts

A behavior is triggered by a cue in your environment or routine, not summoned by willpower. Decide in advance exactly when and where you'll act, and the moment itself does the remembering for you.

Commitment devices

A commitment device is a choice you make now that binds your future self. You lock in a specific plan in advance and put something on the line, so backing out has a cost and showing up becomes the easier path.

Social norms

A social norm is your read on what people like you actually do, and you quietly drift toward it. Show someone that their neighbors use less, and they use less too, without anyone telling them to.

Four of the five principles here cite it, more than any other book, and that is a description rather than a compliment. Defaults, cues, commitment and social norms are one idea seen from four angles, and this is where it got assembled. It also earned the shelf because the lever runs backwards. The same architecture that makes a good choice easy can make a needed one hard.

Where it sits.

Goals it serves.

Read this one first, then go backwards. Thinking, Fast and Slow is the psychology underneath it. Misbehaving is how the field got far enough for this book to exist. Taken alone, Nudge reads as though it invented the ideas.
